Riding a bike in Leiden is a special experience. The different areas of the city can be reached without much effort. We will make several stops to explore and share stories about the historical buildings and hidden courtyards in the city. On a bicycle tour you will also be able to visit sights of Leiden which would be too far to reach on foot.
If you would like to go outside Leiden and experience the beautiful surrounding areas of the city, then I can also offer several different options.
To the salty Sea
Near Leiden, where the city, nature and the sea connect
On this wonderful bike ride we leave Leiden behind us and head to ‘Nationaal Park Hollandse Duinen’. Named after the long stretch of sandy dunes along the North Sea, this unique area in the province of South Holland includes many different landscapes such as dunes, peat meadows, estates, and small villages.
This tour will traverse the park’s dune areas ‘Meijendel’ and ‘Berkheide’, where you can enjoy magnificent views of this natural sandy barrier protecting the back country from the sea.

Along the Canal Ring Park, hidden courtyards, Leiden Castle and lots more.
Staying within the old canal ring that encircles the city center (in Dutch called the ‘singels’) offers ample opportunity to experience Leiden and visit sights too far apart to cover on foot. On a bike we can easily reach the not-to be-missed east side of town and, along the way, we can follow part of the newly opened ‘Singelpark’ route on the border of the historic canal ring, which used to be part of the old city defenses.
We will pass the city wind mills and make stops to discover one of the many hidden courtyards or to climb the hill of Leiden Castle where you can enjoy a beautiful view over the historic center of town.

To the green oasis
Forrest and meadows
Located southwest of Leiden are the ‘Duivenvoordse’ and ‘Veenzijdse polder’; originally wetlands, which were reclaimed in the middle ages for farming and permanent settlement. Near the village of Voorschoten, is the beautiful ‘Kasteel Duivenvoorde’, of which the origins date back to the 13th century. On this bike tour we will pass old farms and country estates among which the royal estate ‘De Horsten’. I have been riding my bike trough this area for many years and I still enjoy it every time I go here. The tour continues through a forested landscape near the village of Wassenaar where we will be following the ‘country estate route’. For many centuries, this area has been a highly desired place to build grand mansions such as the estate ‘Rust & Vreugd’ and ‘Backershagen’. This green oasis is also connected to ‘Nationaal Park Hollandse Duinen’.
